Using and understanding the Comfortable and Compact dashboard views

Learn what everything on the Comfortable and Compact dashboard means, and how to switch views, search, sort, filter and work with appointments.

EveryoneUpdated 10/27/2026

The Dashboard shows every pet booked for the day and lets you check pets in and out, see warnings and notes, and get to an appointment in one click. Comfortable View and Compact View are the newer layouts. They show the same appointments:

  • Comfortable View gives each pet more room, with a bigger photo, breed details and a Packages column. It's best on a large screen.
  • Compact View fits more pets on the screen, with smaller rows and photos.

To open the Dashboard, click Dashboard in the side menu. For the basics, see "Use the Dashboard".

Switch between views

Use the view buttons at the top right, next to the date buttons. Hover over a button to see its name:

The button for the view you're using is highlighted in blue. Click another button and the page reloads in that view.

Tip: Kennel Connection remembers the view you pick for your login, even on a different computer.

Note: On a phone or tablet, the Dashboard always opens in Classic View. Some businesses see a Dashboard View drop-down instead of buttons. It works the same way.

The top of the page

  • Search: start typing a pet name, client name, breed, run, notes or appointment number. The list narrows as you type, and a yellow line under each pet shows what matched. Click the X to clear the search.
  • Service drop-down: show Show All, or only Boarding, Daycare, Grooming, Special Services or a training type.
  • Totals: the number of appointments today for each service, like Boarding or Grooming.
  • Date: click the calendar button (Open Calendar) to pick a day.
  • Day buttons: Go To Today (house), Go To Yesterday and Go To Tomorrow (arrows), and Refresh (circular arrow). Click Refresh to see changes other staff have made.

The status tabs

The tabs under the top bar sort pets by where they are in their visit: All Pets, Arrivals, Checked-In, Departures, Checked-Out, Waitlist and Canceled. Each tab shows a count. When a search or filter is on, the count shows something like "3/12", meaning 3 of the 12 pets match.

What's in each row

Pet

  • The pet's photo. If there's no photo, you can upload one right there.
  • A red ! on the photo means a vaccination problem. Hover over it for details.
  • The pet and client names. Click the pet name to open the pet, or the client name (next to the person icon) to open the client.
  • Comfortable View also shows the breed, gender and whether the pet is spayed or neutered.

Icons

Hover over any icon to read it. Red icons are warnings, black icons are notes, and blue icons are for your information.

Service: a colored badge, like Board, Groom or Daycare, with the services and staff member underneath. Click the badge to open the appointment.

In and Out: the arrival and departure dates and times.

Packages (Comfortable View only): package days left. The paw is the pet's package and the person is the client's. In Compact View, look for the gift icon next to the service badge instead. Hover over it to see days left. F means full days and H means half days.

If your business uses report cards, a report card icon appears next to the status once a card is started. It's blue when it's ready to send and green after it's sent.

Work with an appointment

  1. Use the main button on the row:
    • Check In for a pet arriving today.
    • Check Out for a pet that's here.
    • View to open a checked-out appointment.
    • Make Live to move a waitlisted appointment onto the schedule.
  2. For everything else, click the small arrow next to the main button. The menu includes:
    • Printing: kennel, daycare or groom cards, run cards and the contract.
    • Report cards.
    • View Client, View Pet, View Appointment and View Belongings.
    • Generate Invoice or View Invoice.
    • Confirm Appointment, Mark Completed, Undo Check-in and Undo Check-out.
    • Text Client and Create Next Appointment.
    • Cancel Appointment and Delete Appointment.
  3. Click Send SMS (just SMS in Compact View) to text the client.

Note: Delete Appointment removes the appointment. Use Cancel Appointment if you might need it later.

See more details

Click anywhere on a row (not on a link or button) to open its details. One row opens at a time. Use the tabs:

  • Appointment: run, services, feeding, medication, instructions and the invoice, deposit and balance due.
  • Services Today (boarding): what's scheduled for today.
  • Pet, Package, Client, Warnings and Notes.

Sort, filter and choose columns

  • Sort: click a column heading, like Pet or In. Click it again to reverse the order.

  • More filters: click the filter icon (More) at the end of the headings. You can:

    • Sort by Client Name or Breed in Sort By.
    • Show pets with certain Icons.
    • Filter by Confirmation (confirmed or not confirmed), Client Status (new clients) and Package (on a package, package expired, no package).

Click Apply to use the filters. Click Clear Filters (the small x) to remove them all.

  • Export: click the print icon (Export Appointments as PDF) or the spreadsheet icon (Export Appointments as Excel).

  • Columns: click the gear (Column Settings), tick the columns you want, and click Save changes.

Tip: Your sort order is saved for next time. Filters aren't saved, so they reset when you leave the Dashboard.

Who sees what

What you see depends on your access and your business's services:

  • Restricted groomers only see their own grooming appointments, with a View Appointment button and no Departures tab or texting.
  • Grooming-only businesses don't see the service drop-down, boarding and daycare totals, or packages.
  • Doing several pets at once (bulk check-in or check-out) is only available in Full Day View.

Common questions

Why didn't a pet's status change after someone else checked it in? Click Refresh to load the latest information.

Why can't I find a pet I'm searching for? Check that the Service drop-down says Show All, you're on the All Pets tab, and no filters are on.

Why is there a red "!" on a pet's photo? The pet has a vaccination warning. Hover over it, or open the Pet tab in the details, to see which vaccine.

Tip: Be sure to upload pets photos so they show on the dashboard! You can login to KC Cloud from your mobile device, click the blank image on the dashboard, snap a picture of the pet and save. Done!
